Bas Relief Workshop

Sunday, February 26, 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Virginia Wesleyan Ceramic Studio

Cost Members -$30

Room for 20 participants

Description: Bas Relief is the technique of carving into a slab of clay to make a piece where the figure projects from the surface but is still attached to the surface. This is done by lowering the background, leaving the main object protruding to various degrees. You often see Bas Relief decorating buildings or memorials. It is a technique used on tiles or other thick pieces.

Along with carving into the piece, clay can be added to the surface to enhance the figure being carved.

One of our CDA members, Suzanne Baur, will be the facilitator for this workshop. She is not an expert but will get us started carving our own exploration of Bas Relief. (Suzanne is gifting this workshop to CDA).

Participants will bring a leather hard tile (clay of their choice) and any other pieces they want to carve to the workshop i.e.: platter, pot, etc. They will also bring any clay carving tools they have. Participants can either draw their own design on the clay or find a picture to transfer.

This has been a fun workshop in the past, with everyone sharing ideas and having a good time exploring a technique they may have never tried before.

More details and information will be sent to participants
