This specialized workshop introduces the chawan, a bowl used for preparing and drinking tea. Award-winning ceramic artist Akiko Tanaka will share her knowledge of handbuilding tea bowls and applying unique surface decoration. Students will create their very own set of tea bowls and one lidded incense box. Students will design surface decoration and learn glazing techniques.

The class will conclude with a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony, chanoyu, led by Michiyo Cole. With personalized tea bowls in hand, students will experience a chanoyu, Japanese tea ceremony.
